Aug 19— 1873

Fastened a mimosa leaf on the 17th Aug. at 6 p.m. & another leaf on the 18th at 9. a.m. under water, & kept the plants in cold N. room, the weather being also cold. The leaves of both plants went to sleep & opened properly under water; but on the 20th they seemed paralysed to the effects of pressure; but the one that was immersed on the 18th soon recovered some little sensibility when put in a warmish place. On 20th at 9 a.m. the leaf was immersed & placed on the warm shelf— On neither plant did the leaflets appear at all browned or rotted.

N. B. I think lower side of leaflets cast off water better than upper, but not very well— However hanging down vertically much wd not adhere. Shake a plant & take it out in heavy rain & then when open examine leaves.—
