Cobæa scandens

Circumnutation of young leaf with tendril not fully developed

July 22d to 24th 1878

A young leaf which stood formed with stem an angle of almost 45° had filament affixed to under basal side & observed under skylight— — Movement traced on vertical glass. I did so because I wanted to see whether leaf acquired normal position by circumnutation, but stem was tied rather too tight to stick beneath base of leaf, & the former older t. which was circumnutating vigorously failed rather too soon; but we see that it rose in somewhat zi-zag line line & gradually began to circumnutate — on the 23d circumnutated but little; on the 24' & afterwards circumnutated vigorously & made large sweeps but not traced only so far as to see that this was case. The tracing does not pretend to be accurate as the marks were seen [illeg] high up on vertical glass.

(This had better be introduced when I speak of shoots straightening themselves, under Hyponastic & Epinastic)
