[119]

Sea-Kale

First observed (always under skylight) plant in pot & oft not very healthy, & affixed filament to leaf with petiole 9 1/2 inches long. The apex was in constant movement, but so small in extent as cd hardly be traced. Between 8° 30' a.m. & 10° 30' P.m on Jun 22d it changed its course, chiefly up & down at least 6 times

traced 48° Hours

On 23d fixed filament to younger plant, bearing altogether only 4 true leaves to 3d leaf formed after the 2 Cots. with This leaf was 5 inches in length, of which 3 1/8 consisted of petiole, which stood up not very far from vertical with tip of leaf deflexed so as to be almost horizontal— Apex of leaf 15 1/4 inches from vertical glass, but it is impossible to say how much magnified

See Tracing: movement great, but not regular; for during whole of 23d arched greatly in extremely zig-zag circumnutating course & sank immensely during following night— On 24th descended till 3° P.m & then ascended greatly & quicky during the whole afternoon & night— descending again after 6° 40' a.m till 8° a.m. I may say a great movement up & down, independently of night or day, & effected during the forenoon by zig-zag or circumnutating course—

It may hence have been effected by too feeble illumination
