Eucalyptus resinifera

circumnutation of a leaf

A cut down bush had thrown out a lateral shoot 3 1/2 inches long bearing some young leaves. One whorl (including petiole) was 2 inches in length, stood highly inclined, with its apex in inclined line 14 1/2 inches from vertical glass ; was observed under skylight.— Leaves with their edges as yet not the not vertical. During Jun 7th, the leaf not very often observed moved up & down two & a half times, ie 5 lines were traced, between 9° 15 a.m & 10° 45' P.m.— 13 1/2 h. [sketch]

June 8th. The movements this day were traced more carefully on horizontal roof of case, the apex of leaf being 14 1/2 inches in an inclined direction from the roof. See Tracing two figures on same day; in middle of day pot slided, as figure grow too complicated. There is was some lateral movement, but chief movement up & down (like Cotyledons).—

Between 6° 40' a.m. & 10° 45' P.m (8th) the leaf moved changed its course 13 times up or down; ie made 6 1/2 ellipses in 16°. This the most remarkable fact in case; extent of movement small.—

change course 12 times in 16°─
