Pancratium littorale

Circumnutated of true Leaf.

Leaf moderately young 9 inches. long — inclined in direction of inclination 12 1/2 inches from glass in horizontal line 8 3/8. Observed under skylight from 10° 50' a.m on 18th to 8° 10' a.m on 20th — [sketch] Two tracings made.

On 1 20 19th observation made at longer intervals so figure some less complex. Temp. on 18' 161/2 — 17' on 19° 171/2 C.

There can be no doubt circumnutates in complex course, but the movements extremely small. Assuming that whole leaf moves, which is not probable (Probably only half or quarter of leaf moved) the extent of up & down movement on the 19th is 24° cd have been only — on 18th changed course 8 times.

(A leaf, 9 inches in length inclined at about 45° above horizon was observed in usual manner, & a tracing much magnified made during 2 consecutive days. On the first day it changed its course completely both up & down & laterally, 9 times in 12 hours, the figure traced apparently probably representing 5 ellipses. On the second day it was observed seldom & therefore was seen to change its course seldom seldomer though viz 6 times, but in the same complex manner. The movement were small in extent, but there cd be no doubt about the circum of the leaf.
