Pelargonium zonale— (Scarlet Geranium)

circumnutation of youngleaf

A short plant only 3 1/2 inch high bore young leaf 1 1/4 broad, with petiole about 1 inch long.

[sketch]

48 [+] 13 [=] 61

Apex of leaf 11 1/2 inches from vertical glass.—

Observed from 9° 30' a.m on 14th to 10' 35 P.m. on 16th.—

See tracing. — Leaf sank a good deal during the 14th but between 10° & 4° 30 circumnutated. — On 15' circumnutated on very small scale & intricate man manner between 10° & 6° P.m. —

On 16th a better case of circumnutation, with the whole course remarkably zig-zag.— Not a good case.

Temp. 14th 16-16 1/2 — on 15'  15 to 151/2 — on 16'  do.—

Perhaps Rather too cold for rapid growth.—

A young leaf, 1 1/4 inch in breadth, with petiole 1 inch in length borne on a young plant was observed in usual manner, from during 61 hr & its course is shown in accompanying figure.— Fig. During first day & a half night the leaf assumed a more horizontal position & sank sank a little down, but between 10° a.m & 4° 30' circumnutation. On the 2d day sank & rose again, but between 10° am & 6° P.m circumnutate on a very small scale ‒ On the third day the circumnutation was more plainly marked. —
