Ampelopsis Veitchii

Straightening of the Hooked terminal shoots of a Branch on several branches

July 10th A filament with 2 sights, thus arranged, so that the traced descending line shows that shows terminal shoot is rising. See Tracing I. [sketch] vertical glass

The line fell in slight zig-zag, but after 5° P.m rose a little & then fell — But the tracing has been became so oblique that not accurate. Temp on 10th 18 1/2-19° C.

On July 12th. Filament was now put transversely across another hooked shoot & tracing made, but not worth giving, as any lateral [movement] or twisting of shoot so exaggerates the movement, but tracing shows that the movement of the straightening shoot was far from simple, ie. circumnutated

July 13th, 14, & 15th, & 16th Other tracing was made of 2 Hooked shoots, arranged thus— called "Right-Hand" & "Left Hand shoot" so that when as tracing rises, the shoot was straightening itself. [Insertion:] (Left Hand shoot 5 1/2 inches from glass — Right Hand 8 1/2 inches.) Temp. 17 1/2 to 19°. C

"Left Left Hand. Shoot" Tracing II shoot rose at first, July 13th but between 9° 35 am & 7° 15' P.m. circumnutated then rose till 10° 30' P.m & during the night, greatly.— Next morning (14th) rose till 11° 50' & then descended in somewhat zig-zag line (ie shoot became more hooked) & epinasty powered till 10° 40' P.m. During the night,

however, rose greatly & [2 words illeg] & on following morning was nearly vertical─ It was then so nearly straight that the line cd no longer be traced on vertical glass. By 1° 30' (15th) was quite vertical.

Right-Hand shoot July 13th- to 16th Tracing III on 13th rose descended & then rose in almost straight line till 10° 30' P.m & a short distance during night— On the 14th circumnutated on a very small scale & during whole day rose but little: during night rose considerably.— On 15' rose considerably in almost straight line with only a single zig-zag;— on & rose during night — On 16th was nearly straight & tracing cd not be made accurately, but the shoot certainly circumnutated up & down. By 7° 15' P.m (16th) very nearly vertical straight ie the part which was bowed now nearly straight.

Tracing II. clearly shows that the straightening is modified circumnutation.—
