Genista fragrans  Cot

Cytisus

(Used)

Tied stem previous night, but the upper part had grown so much by middle of next day, that may be considered as almost free & fixed bristle to 1 Cot. longitudinally— Kept in dark & traced on Vertical glass. Diagram (1) but not trustworthy for I got into some confusion with the tracings— It shows only that there was movement & I believe more complex than tracing. I believe that Cots. become depressed slightly & had risen again slightly by 4°. I presume considerable nutation, but retarded by being tied. To the eye Cots. do not sleep

(I put bristle to Cot. of another plant & tracing (not given) sunk in zig-zag line & never rose was, I think, overpowered by weight) The oddest fact about the former spec. was that next morning at 6°. 50' the point was as high as ever & moved slight to right by 8°.

(Oct 23. Traced movement of stem whole plant by affixing bristle parallel to axis with mark clo below, on horizontal glass— Plant kept in dark [sketch]

Tracing magnified: Diagram 2. actual measurement cd be calculated — Movement wonderfully simple. Tracing magnified 7.4 times
