Oct 17. (Ipomœa) Pharbitis nil. (Convolvulus

Is it a climber?

Oct 17 Fixed bristle to the 2. Cots & tied stem to stick & observed on vertical glass. first dot at 8º. 55, & both Cots, then rose so greatly that at 12º out of glass at 8º 12' P.m were descending & on glass again. Next morning Oct 18 at 6º 45 were lower on glass than at 8º 55' on previous day, & began rising in exactly same manner.

Traced on Horizontal glass (diagram 1) stem tied movements little, & such as they were, were due I believe to the Cots, being oblique towards light so that upward movement would cause a lines such as those traced. It follows from this diagram, that the downward movement commenced at about 4º P.m., & continue in night or very early morning the upward movement begins.

Whether any lateral movement I know not, but I think so from some zigzagging in Right-Han Cot in Diagram (1).

At early night the 2 Cots looked rather more open or depressed than during day— but scarcely distinguishable & can be of no use.

(The upward & downward movement of Cot. much influenced by light, for I cover protected by concave card with roof, but open to back of room, the plant above experimented on, & made dot at 10º 30', continue to rise normally till 11º 45, but at 12º 15' had gone down considerably & continued to sink till 4º P.m, when almost out of glass. Therefore sinking began at about 12º, instead of at about 4º as seems the normal time.)

Ipomœa nil

Oct 22d Nutation of ax 2 Plants; with very small plumule & good Cots Plant kept dark [sketch] traced on Horizontal glass. — See diagram 2. The air got damp & gummed bristle slipped down, after 2 or 3 Hours; but there is manifest nutation in stem. The left-hand Plant moved thrice in one direction & twice in a nearly opposite one in course of 3º. 15.— The right-hand plant rises twice in 1 direction & twice in nearly opposite one in 2º. 22'.—

On the whole diurnal movement of cotyledons & nutation of axis.
