[196]

Lathyrus nissolia

1877 Nov. 20 & 21st

(Used)

Cotyledons hypogean. Therefore observed a young plant, 1.2 inches in height above ground, consisting of 3 internodes, with scales at base the lower Q ones almost wholly subterranean, the uppermost ones bearing long closely involuted leaf embracing younger leaves & axis— All free, movement traced on horizontal glass in darkness during Nov. 20 & 21' [diagram]

The internodes came up bowed in usual manner,

Line of Tip of involuted leaf observed with black spot beneath. See the 2 diagrams. That on 21' shows clear nutation, 2 ellipses having been completed between 6º 45' a.m & 10º. 35 P.m.

Tracing magnified 11.8 times say 12 times —Give actual length of ellipses.. During both days there was an extensive movement in the same directions.— during the morning., though that on Nov. 20th not given. Cases Whether both internodes & young involuted leaf nutate next I know not.— (Case interesting as leaf apparently is a modified tendril.— (no I ought to have secured internodes.)

All that I can say is some sp. of Lathyrus
