Circumnutation of Cotyledon [sketch]

A moderately healthy seedling, had hypocotyl P 2 inch in length tied to stick P Cotyledon with pla petiole in breadth 1 1/4 in length breadth, shorter & had been kept all day in Hothouse, so well illuminated & placed at 4° 20 under Skylight (Temp 19 3/4 C) (See Tracing) Apex of Cot (Cot almost Horizontal ) 5 3/4 from vertical glass. Cot fell till 12° 30' at night— By 3° 45 a.m (21') had risen considerably & probably continued to rise for some time, for by 6° 20' a.m. had only fallen a little. Then continued to fall in slightly zig-zag line to 10° 30' P.m. Probably fell still more, for next morning at 6° 45' a.m had risen very little & was to left side; rose till 8° a.m.

Was then neglected, by by 11° 45' was put under bell-glass in study & kept in rather obscure light, & continued to fall till

We may conclude movement very simple up & down, & that it falls (for first days observation best) till about midnight & then begin to rise: but there was a great difference in the f 2 latter days ie 21' & 22d between 6° 20' a.m & 8° a.m 2° P.m, for on first 22d fell during this interval & on second morning rose 23d rose whole time. On third morning (23d) between 5° & 9° P.m

(N.B. from 8° a.m on 22d to 8° 30' on 23d traced only roughly on Bell-glass & not observed between 8° & 11° 45'.)

went up & down fell to 10° 15 & rose considerably in night & was rising between 6° 45 a.m & 8° 30 a.m.— The periods of movement seem quite uncertain, unless indeed affected by varying light to an extraordinary degree.
