Canary-grass 1877

Nov. 26th

Observed 3 plants, of somewhat different height, about 1 1/2 inch high, surrounded on all sides so that light came in only from vertically above, & there was no bending to any side. Traced on horizontal glass. Tips of Cot with speck of chalk & black black dots on ground beneath

Left Hand plant, Diagram A., traced for rather more than 12° made 2 circles, if the marks had been made oftener no doubt 2 ellipses at right angles to each other wd have been formed; magnified 6 7/10 times, so can give actual movement. Position next morning shown.

(Used)

Right-hand plant, Diagram B. 2 ellipses & a small one. Tracing magnified 6 4/10 times.

Middle plant Diagram C. This tracing was more magnified, by mark below being placed nearer, so that at 11° 3' off glass & remain so till a little after 1°.—

It is singular that next morning between 7° 25' & 8° 45' i.e. 1° 20' none of the 3 plants moved much; I suppose the plants having been ⸮⸮⸮ Kept always surrounded by brown bro paper & very slightly illuminated especially during day before had become torpid — I do not understand cause — better say so.—
