Canary grass. (Nutation of young Seedling)

Seedling just peeping from ground, about 1/70' above surface, cleared earth a little way round it, & traced (without any filament) movement of tip with black dot below, much magnified on horizontal glass, protected from all lateral light, from 11° 37 to 9° 30'—ie 10 Hours. ─See diagram— clearly nutated, but moved chiefly to one side no relation to light— probably from earth being disturbed round it, as was necessary — changed course greatly 6 times in this interval.
