Cotyledon. Primula Sinensis 1877 (stem not secured)

Oct. 9. The 2 Cots. placed with line joining them transversely to light. Bit of paper pointed & bent into rectangle, fixed, projecting 7/8 of inch & gummed the one cot. with pointed mark behind & vertical glass in front. — High broken N.E. clouds. Cots fall fell from 8°. 40' a.m. to 4°. 40' with mu zig-zagging

First dot 8°. 44' a.m. Last 10°. 45'. When Cotyledon falls or open the line moves in curve to right, & when Cot. rises moves to left Cot rose from 4°. 40' to 10° 45 P.m.

This is main effect, but there must be some lateral or oblique movement. It follows that in morning this morning Cot. opened f. fell or opened, & that from .6°. 20' to 10° 45' the cot. was rising. But in middle of time complicated movements up & down.— Next morning Oct 10' was at cross, & then moved to right, so that Cot. was then opening

(Oct 10'. The same Cot. in same position. End of Bristle first moved to left right & then a little up. Diagram 2. & then down & then in zig-zag to 1°. 3. The movement was thus far more simple than yesterday & I then observed, that first little-leaf of adjoining plant had caught cot. by base of paper, & when freed it suddenly changed its position.

A new tracing was now begun at 1°. 5 (see Diagram 3.) & now resumed former character, was traced to 10° 43', Cot in morning rose fell (thus entangled) from 1° to 4° zigzag from 4° 30' to 10° 40 7° 20 rose & then fell again so movement goes on long after dark, & the latter movement was one of depressing the Cot. & this agrees with no signs of ordinary sleep in the young plants. The little plant

besides the 2 Cot. had one little leaf 1/4 of inch long from apex to base.

The tip of bristle paper was only 3/8 of an inch in advance of triangular card behind plant, & the vertical glass. 9 3/8 inches in front of pointed paper gummed on leaf. As Cot. bonded to pointed bit of paper 7/8 of an inch long wd of course in increase greatly the appeared distance travelled by the Cot. up & down; but besides this the relative distance of glass — leaf & card behind wd increase the movement about 26 times. The magnifying power varies
