[36]

Oct 15' Oat. Avena 1877

A young leaf 1 1/2 inch high quite free with tip white & red pin-head traced on horizontal glass. see diagram (1) moved to light all day, but oddly zig-zag from 11° 32' to 512', looks like nutation. — From 6' to 10° 25' moved very little, & during rest of night continued to move in same direction towards light.—

Oct 16 New tracing all in same position, but more magnified. see diagram (2) went on moving to light: 11° 3' to 11' 33' day more cloudy & nutation. From 12° 35' for some hours sky wonderfully black, & there is strong nutation. I cannot decide whether nutation destroyed or only masked by heliotropism.

This well worth giving
