Tomato Cot.

Cotyled

Oct 17th Cot. with no true leaves: Bristles fixed long to the 2 Cots. stem secured to stick— traced on vertical & Horizontal glass, but light perhaps interfered.— The 2 Cots. were not pointed in same direction. Right-Hand Cot. (Diagram 4.) the vertical glass shows that Cot. descended from 8° 32' to 12°. 5' when it ceased rising descending? & from horizontal glass Diagram 2. (N.B the cot was inclined to light) I suppose moved laterally. At 3°. 58' (as seen in vertical glass 4.) began to rise & continued till 10° 30' P.m. rising in line parallel to the falling course. A similar parallel movement seen on Horizontal glass (2)— The falling means the Cot opening & the rising means their shutting together. At night so closely closed that is true sleep.

Left Hand Cot. ln on vertical glass Diagram 3 likewise fell at first & was then I think overpowered by weight of Bristle & sank below glass. — On Horizontal glass (Diagram 1) moved to N.E till 11° 18', then back to S.W to 2. 55' & at 3°. 55 to N.E again.

Now between 11° 18' & 2° 55' on vertical glass, there is small & curious figure, & this makes me conclude that tip of Cots describes a figure like this. [sketches]
