Maize— Radicle, nutation of
Took 2 seeds of which radicles just protruded barely 1/20' of inch & fixed glass-filament to them, whilst lying upside down on damp sand & traced movement on Hor. glass in darkness. 24 [+] 12 [+] 2 [=] 38
(1) moved in very slightly zig-zag course in one direction from 8º 25' to 6º 6' P.m. by which time it had begun to returned in nearly parallel course. It continued in same course all that night & on 15th & morning of 16th, but then during 15 & 16 went in very complex zig-zag course, but from examining it afterwards it seems shrinking & drying, though occasionally watered, so that later observations cannot be trusted in this or next case.—
(2) The second seed, from the first went in zig-zag course, (which after first day became excessively complex & due no doubt to drying). There was one prevalent direction in this & last case, due no doubt to geotropism.—
Probably nutates whilst hypogean.—
