Feb. 4th & 5th to mg of 6th Maize— circumnutation of Plumule

Plumule projected .2 of inch & glass filament .4 of inch long was fixed rather obliquely to its summit, with mark mark below & traced on Horizontal glass. By the third third morning the plumule had grown grown to .6 in height, carrying with it the filament, so increasing the distance greatly between its end & the mark below. Therefore the movements during the second day were is less magnified than on the first day. The mean magnification of tracing probably about 25 times. The plant was illuminated by obscure light coming solely from vertically above: it is very necessary to exclude any lateral light, for as on the previous day I had observed traced movement of plumule cot of a plant placed within within a large box, one side of one side which was feebly illuminated on its own within by light from a distant N.E window & occasionally at each observation by a wax taper not always held in exactly the same position on side, & the plumule Cot moved to the side, though making some marked flexures, which made me infer without doubt that its was circumnutation, though this movement was almost overpowered by heliotropism.— To return to complex figure given in the tracing; this shows that the plumule certainly circumnutates: The 2 dotted lines show course during night. The tracing is was from 8°. 30' a.m. on Feb. 4th. to 8° a.m on Feb. 7th.─
