Oct 19th Plantlet safely secured to stick Kept in dark, bristle fixed longitudinally to one [sketch]

Cot. with point beneath.— Plant too old, stem of Cot 1 3/8 high— Leaf in middle 1/4 inch long for the Cot. did go to sleep well [much] opake Cover removed for a few seconds for each observation last night or next. It is evident from Diagram (1) that the cotyledons nutates much considerably, independently of stem & independently of any light tracing from 8° 15 to 10° 30' P.m. It is evident that the cotyledon nutates. Chief nutation in middle of day.

Also observed plants of same size & too great age; [sketch] Kept dark; stem not secured: see diagram (3): the stem evidently nutates a little, like the cotyledon; but movements very small. Chief nutation nutation in middle of day. Next morning slided glass see diagram (4) moved chiefly from light.
