Nov. 8. 77/

Canna Warscewiczii

I fixed glass filament within outer sheath-like leaf of young plant 1 inch high, but I am not sure that it did not slip & observed on horizontal glass; it moved greatly to left & then I think At 7° 25' I looked down the filament to apex of leaf & observed to 10° 25', & the point moved toward me a little & next morning had gone considerably back, & I think this was nutation, but probably F. darkened room with no fire was too cold.

(Used)

Nov. 9th I put glass filament in sheet same sheath & tied it within apex with thread & mark below & observed from 8° 45' a.m

Nov. 9th to 8° 10' Nov. 11th— Kept in complete darkness in F. room, with no fire first day & fire 2d day, when it went more crooked— No doubt too cold, as brought from Hot-House Tracing magnified only 5.62 time say 6 times. (See diagram z.). This diagram reports not completed circles, one made each day. — Course rather zig-zag.— Must be considered as irregular nutation. Dotted lines supposed course during night—

I tried carefully whilst plant under glass & rubbing one side along whole length did not cause curvature, but then Kept too cold.—
