1878 Herbaceous Cotton
15th 8° 30' all unhealthy— thrown away except 1 (5° 30') with sqr & shell-lac. refixed in damp air on Table
July 13th 9° 15' attached 4 bits of covering glass to 4 radicles with 14' 9° refixed 2 lost sqr. & added 2 fresh seeds— sand-paper & asphalte' asphalt or Balsam of Condc. & filled jar with water & placed in cellar near ice-box— temp 58° F. 14th 8° had not grown— sqr dropped off 2— Placed on sand Bath
(July 13th 9° 15' fixed sq. of sand-paper with Asphalte or Caud. Balsam Radicles immersed in water filled up jar with water & stood on sand-Bath. temp 70°—75° 68°—77° Room 62°—63° "Second jar)
(1) 4° 30' perhaps little curved from sq no effect (14th 8° 30' no clear effect sq washed off; refixed card & Asphalte (14' 4° 45' refixed glass & asphalte.) (15th. 8° 10 sq. with shell-lac.. in a (16th inclined from square but is whole radicle inclined not trustworthy
(2) 4° 30' no effect (14th 8° 30 has not grown)
(3) 4° 30 curved from sq (14th 8° 30 do & from seed)
(4) 4° 30 no effect (14th 8° 30 curved laterally from sq.
(5) 4° 30 no effect (14th 8° 30' curved at 50° from sqr.

Cotton
(6) 13' 4° 45' glass sqr card fixed (14th 8° 30 : 4° 45 completely Hooked sqr. dropped off
(7) like (6) glass fixed (14' 8° 30'
(8) like (7) (14th 8°. 30 sqr dropped off; refixed card & asphalt.) (dropped) 4° 45' refix (15th 8° 20 sq. with shell-lac (16.th 8° no effect)
(9) like (7) (14' 8° 30 no effect. sq. not touching apex) (14' 4° 45' refixed glass & asphalte. dropped off (15th sqr with shell-lac.) (16th 8° no effect)
(10) like (7) 14' 8° 30' sq. dropped off refixed card & asphalte — refixed glass & asphalte 15' sq. with shell lac (16th 8°. no effect
15th 8° a.m. I fond the square dropped off almost all many refixd as above — threw away 3 — Kept on sand-bath in damp air— 4°. 45 look yellowish & miserable. (16th dying)
Summary— in 5 cases the sq. caused curvature under water & in 5 cases did not act, but some of the latter were poor miserable specimens.—

July 14th 8° 45' a.m— on sand-Bath sqr of sand Paper & Asphalte — Jar with wooden top Cotton
Radicle immersed in water (Jar make B)
(1) straight & long 4° 45 apex bent at rt angle (15. 8° 30 now going geotropically with basal part to S.
(2) str. a little inclined to right sq in opposition— (4° 45 no effect ) now inclined greatly to S (16th 8° a.m tip of radicle now above seed, but sq. rather lateral
(3) str. very slightly inclined to Rt & from S (4° 45 no effect) (15 8° 30' do, but now greatly inclined to S.
(4) str. rather short inclined to left sq. in opposition— (—4° 45 no effect) (15th 8°. 30' do
(5) short greatly inclined to left sq. so as to increase inclination (4° 45' I think has acted (15 8° 30' ??) (16th yet I think has acted
(6) short inclined to left sq. in opposition to mark (4° 45 dropped off put on glass so as to make to bend from gravity (15th. 8° 30' no effect)
(7) long & straight (4° 45 no effect) 15' 8° 30' do
(8) long & straight (4° 45' no effect) (15th 8° 30' dropped off —refixd with shell lac bit of glass 16th 8° a.m. no effect
(9) short str. inclined to left sqr so as to increase inclination (4° 45 no effect) — 15th 8° 30 do)
(15th 8° 30' placed jar on sand Bath damp air: 4° 45 look very poorly.

Cotton In Water
Summary in 1 acted, in 2 doubtfully acted in 6 did not act,. 1
General Summary of 2 papers — 19 radicles tried under water with sq. of sand-paper & bits of thin glass cemented to roots — in only 6 acted plainly in 2 doubtfully & 11 not at all, but some of the latter were poor unhealthy radicle which did not grow & in one or 2 cases squ. objects cd be seen not to touch apex— But results not conclusive nevertheless— I think I may say sometime act— It is clear that roots will keep healthy for very short time treated unnaturally as done in all cases.

June 20' 1879 Gossypium herbaceum— Radicles— dry germinated in damp. peat. — on chimney-piece.— apex touched only once on one side with dry caustic— at 7°. 50' a.m. Suspended close over water & well splashed a few minutes after caustic. All with caustic laterally
(1) caustic (21st 8° has now grown upside down with no relation to black mark, which is hardly 1/2 mm in length O
(2) Caustic 1° P.m I think a little bent from black mark(?) 4° 30' do (21st 8° a.m curved from black mark 2/3. of mm.
(3) caustic. 1° P.m distinctly bent from mark. 4° 30' curvature extends down for 9 m.m— after the 8th 25 / 9 mm 25° from vertical (21st 8° curved wildly down toward cork now with no apparent relation to mark
(4) Caustic 1° P.m distinctly bent from mark 4° 30' 25° from perpendicular. — curvature 6 mm for 6 mm (21st 8° still more curved from mark — 55° from perpendicular.— mark about 2/3 m.m.) X
(5) Caustic 1° P.m distinctly bent from mark; 4. 30' has become perpendicular (21st 8° am slightly curve from mark)
(6) Caustic 1° P.m distinctly bent from mark: 4° 30, 15° from perpendicular (21' 8° 45° from perpendicular — mark about 2/3 m.m) X
(7) Caustic 4° 30' straight —(21' 8° a m black mark very minute— Sachs curvature strong no relation to mark) O
(8) caustic 1° P.m. 7 mm distinctly bent from Caustic 4° 30', 65° from perpendicular curvature 7 mm. —(21st 8° a.m— Horizontal, but no relation to mark X
21' 8° a.m The radicles have now grown wildly— they now form a great contrast with the 7 control specimens, only one of which has grown wildly, viz up towards & touching cork

Control specimen at same time suspended
(1) 4° 30' P.m— all 7 straight & perpendicularly down, except no 10, which is very long radicle & this is straight but has grown inclined—

Conclusion. out of the 8 with caustic 4 distinctly bent, after 8° & even after 5°, & more so after 24° the movement case — 2 slightly & 2 not at all In the latter the black mark extremely minute great contrast with the 7 controls — Black mark in no case 1 m.m in length, curvature extend from 9 m to 6 mm.— After 24° the radicles had grown wildly in all sorts of directions.
