Veg. marrow Jar C
23d. 4° 50' P.m placed germinating radicles half immersed in water on study Table, but now (24th 8° 50') had hardly grown, so poured away some water & left in damp air on Study Table.
4° 45' grown very little fixed sq. on 3 R.s 25' 8° 30' no effect
25' 8° 30' fixed sqr with asphalt or shell-lac. on all under hour grown better— 5° P.m these look much better than other lots— several are inclined from sqr, but tips not abruptly curved from them— These grow mostly in direction opposed to Sachs curvature & therefore great contrast to former lot— see under what condition raised— Might be curious to investigate whether temperature or immersion at first in water does not modify Sachs curvature
26th 8° 30' several are curiously inclined from card— I do not know what to think. — (26' 4° 45 put on card in opposition to existing curvature & marked with pin 2 radicles— 27th 10° 45' one perhaps has acted, the other not at all— The evidence from this jar altogether doubtful

Veg. Marrow Jar B
23d 4° 50' P.m fixed with shell-lac. sqr. on 6 Radicles in air on sand-bath. (24th 8°. 30' had grown greatly; no effect. sq. dropped off 4 of them— fixed on the 4 oth dropped ones. sq. with asphalt.— The Radicle grow strongly to Sachs.
4° 30' P.m. no effect.
25' 8° a.m no effect— now immersed Radicle in water
— 4° 45. cards all washed off. — not possible to fix them with asphalt or shell-lac.— 4° 50 fixed with shell-lac. sqr on sqr 6 secondary roots & exposed to damp air on sand-Bath
26' 8° 20' out of the 6, 2 have decided bend some way down, in direction from sq.— & tip does not touch sq. in another case & in another case sq. too Heavy to lift— 8° 50' fixed on some more small sq. but they are so flexible they bend with weight— 26' 4° 40' P.m no effect
27' 10° 40' a.m.— One is slightly kinked, as ought to occur from square

Veg. marrow. Jar B A
23d 4° 50' put several germinating seeds half immersed in water on sand Bath, but radicles (24th 8° 30') had hardly grown & what little had grown had curved abruptly to Sachs; so now left in damp air on sand Bath, but I fixed sq. with asphalt on 2 of the best. (4° 40' forgot & shook jar one washed off)
25' 8° a.m. no effect— Rad have hardly grown at all Immersed Rad in water on sand-Bath here (5° P.m. look wretched will not grow)
28' 8° 30' a.m. do. do.)
After they have grown a good deal: then try immersion in water.

Veg. Marrow. Egg-shaped Var Great Jars
1878
July 24th 9° a.m pinned several seed on cover & left in damp air on sand-bath. 4° 40' fixed with asphalt sq. on 3 R
25 8° 30 have grown very badly, hardly at all — Left on Study Table sq. dropped off 2— 1 perhaps affected by sqr
25. 5° P.m. The main radicles have never developed— I suppose too hot but the secondary ones are now developing.
26' 8° 40' a.m fixed small sq with shell-lac on 8 secondary radicles— main (& on 1 other main radicle— others grow miserably: 4°. 50' no effect
27th 10° 45' no evidence of action on secondary roots
25' 5° Pinned 2 Sultan Gourds on cover. Sickly
