1879.   very lightly touched with dry Caustic — perpendicularly

(1) Caustic 12° .30' ie. 4°. 30' well curved from black mark very small (4°. 50 in 8° 50' bent at rt angles ∠ 25th 8° a.m tremendously grew at rt. angle

Black mark— not black

(4) C. do well curved 4° 50' right angle ∠ 26' 8° am now only very slightly curved, viz 15° from vertical decreased

(5) C. do well curved 4° 50' almost right a. — (26th 8°. do.) ∠ 5 ∠3

(7) C. do— (slightly) curved 4° 50' very slightly curved; discolouration almost equally all round, but rather deeper on side from which apex bend —(26th 8° a.m apex now straight.— whole radicle somewhat curved from mark decreased

(8) C. do.— slight do 4° 50; curved at about 45° from perpendicular ∠ 25' 8° a.m. like yesterday 53° from vertical increased

(9) C. do only slightly just perceptibly curved— 4° 50' tip curved at 45°— Black mark excessively minute 25 8° a.m about 45°. same    ∠

(10) C do slightly curved 4° 50' very slightly curved, black mark only just visible through strong Lens. 25 .8° .am. 37° from vertical increased

(11) C — do (very short & O young straight) 4° 50'— curved at about 40° from perpendicular ∠ 26th 8°. 20° from vertical radicle very short had not grown well decreased

  Radicles have all grown immensely

9 Control specimens. 12° 30' all 9 controls perfectly straight— excellent case 4° 50' one has become somewhat curved from seed & 2 others on tips alone a little curved. 26th 8° a.m. only one has radicle itself curved, but owing to growth of Hypocotyl — 2 other irregular

Jun 20th  Cucurbita ovifera — Radicles — germinated on damp peat — 1879  placed on chimney-piece — apex touched only once with dry Caustic on one side— at 4° 50' P.m —Suspended over water & well splashed., a few minutes after Caustic — All touched laterally

(After 4 h. 50' 2 were curved from Black mark & the 1 freshily put on more caustic & too much. & tips became bent to brnt side on the following morning.)

Jun 21st 1879 8° a.m. Curcurbita ovifera.— touched one on one side with

caustic suspended vertically over water  (3

at 1° P.m no effect — at 4h 30' immersed radicle in water

(1) Caustic 4° 30' Black mark hardly visible

(22d 8° a.m no difference all grown wildly— Those without caustic are not geotropic or hardy at all— —Most of them extended more or

Hyopcotyl. as it grows—

(3) Caustic 4° 30' a trace of curvature

(4) Caustic 4° 30' Black mark hardly visible

(5) Caustic 4° 30' injured all round

(6) Caustic 4° 30' black all round

6 Control radicles. (all straight)

21' 4° 30 P.m.. The tips of these long radicles so thin that caustic affects the whole thickness. There was only trace of curvature in one case
