(1
July 4th 1879. 2° 10 P.m
Cucurbita ovifera. Radicles extended horizontally on Pot 1 thinly thickly covered with Peat: 10. touched on now lower side of apex (2 Big Pins) & 10 touched on upper side & that would aid Geotropism.— The former wd be opposed to Geotropism.
(4th 10°. 15' P.m. ie after 8hr of the 10 touched above all are geotropic; 3 rectangularly so & the rest in a very marked manner.—
Of the 10 touched below, 3 4 quite straight; 4 3 slightly geotropic but not nearly so much so as the above 10, with which they form a strong contrast; & 3 distinctly & much curved upwards in opposition to geotropism, so that the touch of caustic on lower side of apex has conquered the power of geotropism.)
(July 5' 9° a.m.— ie 19hr The 10 touched above above all strongly & mostly rectangularly geotropic, but I doubt whether more so than if they had never been touched with caustic at all.—
Of the 10 touched below, 3 geotropic strongly, but hardly so strongly as the foregoing 10— 4 horizontal one, however with a trace of geotropism.— Of the 3 which last night were upturned in opposition to gravity; one is so still; one has become slightly geotropic; & one has bent laterally, & is not geotropic but abnormal.—
To show that in one from ascension that a touch with could do not prevent bending (This had better come at end)
