 Peas Radicles 1879 8° 45' a.m

(Big Topping Jar)

June 8th Suspended perpendicularly over water— one side of apex just touched with caustic— Peas in different positions. (9th. 8° a.m immersed all the radicles in water)

(1) 4° 25 slightly curved from mark (9th 7° 45' a.m. declined about 40° from black mark) 10th 8°. am slightly curved from mark

after 8° 30'

(2) 4° 25 no curvature hardy any mark, retouched laterally (9th 7° 45' slightly but certainly declined from mark 10th 8° a .m curved almost at right angles from mark

(3) 4° 25 mark on summit, no curvature retouched on summit (9th 7° 45 whole tip. blackened, but rather more or one side & declined slightly from this side (10th 8° a.m very doubtful curvature, rather say none.)— I may safely say slight curvature at first from mark

(4) 4° 25 curve curved from mark (9th 7° 45', decidedly but not strongly curved from mark. (10th 8° am strong curved almost at right angles from mark

(5) 4° 25 very light brown mark— slightly curled retouched (9th 7° 45 a.m. not affected) (10th 8° a.m whole end of radicle killed & distorted

(6) 4° 25' mark on summit,— no curvature, retouched (9th 7° 45' barely or not at all affected.)

10th 8° a.m. just like (5))

Half acted 4 (4/6 acted)

June 8th 8° 40' a.m.

1879. Jar B

Peas radicles, extended horizontaly over water with card on lower side of apices to see whether stimulus from contact will over come geotropim.

(1) card with shell-lac

(9th 8° a.m. All these are strongly & plainly geotropic !!!)

(2) like (1)

(3) like (1)

(4) like (1)

(5) Card with gum

(6) like (5)

4° 15' P.m. no marked geotropism, except one with loose card & gum.

June 9th 1879.

8° 25' a.m

(Cards— see other side)

Extended Horizontally

4° 25' all 6 slightly geotropic so again cards have not prevented action of geotropism— What can be cause of difference?

10th. 8° a.m all vertically geotropic!

145

July 10th 8° 5' a.m. 1879.    Peas Radicles with extended horizontally

(A) on peat & covered with Peat, 10 touched with Caustic on upper side of apex — 10 left untouched— & 10 controls..— These peas had all germinated with hilum downwards, in which case radicle protrudes in same line in which it is embedded enclosed within seed-coats. (1 Big touched above— 2 Pins touched below— opposed to Geotropism. 3 Pins Control)

10 A

Touched with Caustic above in aid of Geotropism: (July 11th 8° a.m. aft 24 hr There is no marked difference in geotropism between these & the 10 control— all the shorter radicles quite as geotropic as the controls— but there are 2 or 3 longer radicles longer than any of controls & these are never so much geotropic.— This case very important for it shows at least that touch of caustic at apex does not stop geotropism.

10 B

Touched below with Caustic opposed to Geotropism 4° 50' P.m. after 8° 45' 4 of the 10 upturned decidedly 1 slightly geotropic — the other 5 straight,— but then some of A upturned & almost all straight; & only a few of C. geotropic as far as I could judge. (July 11' 8° a.m (ie aft 24°) (1) rectangularly geotropic & in this one I cd see no black mark on apex (2) about 45° — (3) slightly / (4) with just visible trace of G. (5 & 6) straight & horizontal. (7) bowed upwards radius 10 mm.

(8) bowed upward 5 m.m. (9) bowed upwards 70 mm (10) bowed upwards 30 m.m.

This case very good confirming Frank about Beans & confirming my own case with cards affixed to lower side of apex. C

10 not touched — controls. (see under A) — 1 specim hardly geotropic, very short & unhealthy.

Used under Geotropism

July 10th 8° 40' a.m 1879

Peas radicles— extended horizontally over water in darkness in passage— with little square of card — cemented — shell-lac to lower side of apex opposed to Geotropism

(1) Card 8° 20' 5° P.m slightly geotropic (—rather long. R. )

Control

(2) card like (1) more geotropic (rather long R)

(3) card 5° P.m more geotropic, almost rectangularly ben geotropic (rather long R)

(4) card 5° like (2 or 3) (moderately long R)

(5) card 5° P.m decidedly turned in opposition to geotropism — rather short R

(left hand side)

(6) Card 5° P.m Horizontal — rather short R

Controls

(7) (9) 5° P. rectangularly geotropic — not very long R

(8) (0) 5° almost rectangularly ge. short R

(9) (9) 5° very slightly geotropc short R.

(10) (0) 5 rectangularly geotropic Short R

(11) (0) 5° slightly geotropic long. R.

12 (0) 5° like (1) long. R.

[diagram]

   (over)

(11th 7° 40' a.m. ie after 25h There is now no difference in the 6 with card & without card— in both cases the longer radicles are only moderately geotropic— the shorter ones rectangularly geotropic. No 5 only remarkable one for this bent rather past the zenith & is becoming hooked—

July 12th 8° a.m has now almost circular or hoop-shaped— hoop large for apex is now acted on by geotropism & is bending geotropically has nearly touched the Pea itself

146v

Under geotropism— I have given excellent case of 10 radicles of Pea touched below with Caustic. & of which were bowed upwards— laid in Peat, fairest method.— Refer to this my MS. p. 764.
