Experiment 1

Sieve 40 above H

5/8

Sep 10th: 10. AM

Greased 1.5 mm on 4 roots; two of which (6.5mm & 8.5mm) were growing vertically down; the other two wer ( 8.5mm & 6mm ) were almost touching the surface omit.

Sep 10th 9 PM The two vertical ones are still vertical and have grown 2 or 3 mm each; the two which were nearly touching are now growing along the surface

Sep 11. 8. 43 am — The vertical ones are only 10° inside the vertical.

Of the 6 not greased roots 3 closely pressed to surface, 2 too short to have bent, 1 (9 mm) has grown vertically down.

Experiment (2) Sieve 40° above Hor

Sep 13. 11. 27am greased 2 mm on 2 3 roots which were from 4 to 6 mm in length projected from 4 to 6 mm and grew vertically down. In 24 hrs they grew were to from 15mm to 20mm & still approximately vertical On Sep 15 —one of them had bent well to the wet; this one grew much better I suppose in consequence of getting at the damp surface for on Sep 16 (after 71 hrs) it was 30 mm while the other two which were still vertical had hardly grown since Sep 14 & were 17 & 21 mm

S/9 — Greased 2 mm on 3 roots each about 30mm long & growing nearly parallel & close to the but not touching the wet surface ; after 24 hrs, one had not grown one had grown 9 mm & was close to wet; the 3rd had grown 2 1/2 mm & was in the same position as regards the wet surface—

Greased 2 mm of 5 roots {A, B; C; S & T} of lengths varying from 4 to 9.5 mm and growing out at rt angles to the wet surface. After 19 hrs they have grown increased by quantities varying from 5mm to 8 mm and have not bent to the wet, though 2 of them have not quite kept their original angles

Two of these subsequently did bend to wet pads, one did not

Greased 1 mm of |1, 2, 3, 4, 5| 5 roots whose lengths vary from 4mm to 9.5 mm, and which in the position in which the sieve hangs (30° above horizon) are from 10° to 40° inside the vertical , that is they are from 50° to 20° distant from the surface of the sieve. After 24 hrs two of these have got distinctly nearer the r sieve, the other three have bent vertically down at their tips. After 24 hrs more there was only one left which grew vertically down the rest having gone close to wet

surface or are quite close to it, the other 3 have grown fairly vertically down. On the following day ie abut 24h the same two are close to wet but I saw that one had only a speck of caustic the other was cauterized chiefly on the side away from the wet sieve. The other two three have hardly gone any nearer to the wet—

After 25 1/2 hrs from the beginning they are 11.5mm to 18mm long a still grow vertically down— A 4th root (7 mm) was then greased (Sep 10.th 10. 45am) which grew in 22 hrs to a length of 12 mm but & did not go to the wet but remained vertical.

Sep 10. 10. 17 am— Greased 2mm of 7 roots varying from 4 to 11 mm & mostly growing vertically down. After 11 hrs they have increased so as vary from 7 to 16 mm; 4 5 of them have not gone at all to the wet side; 1 has moved about 10° towards it, & one has gone rather more distinctly towards the wet.

Ex 11 S/8 Sieve 40° above Sep 11. 9am Greased (2 mm I think) 3 roots varying from of 3 to 7.5 and 11 mm in length which are growing down slightly outside the vertical. After 12 hrs they have grown to 7, 13 & 17 mm but have not are still all outside what does this mean the vertical, & were still at about vertical 25 3/4 hrs from the beginning of the experiment

What was general angle of Sieve

Ex 12 Sieve 40° above Sep 12. 10.47 pm

Greased 2 mm (I think) on 4 roots projecting 5 to 8 mm & growing out about at rt angles to the sieve surface

After 36 1/2 hrs they have increased so as to project 18mm to 23 on is still at rt angles to the sieve surface , the other 3 are vertical— Geotropism wd. cause this. On Sep 14. 11. 10 am, Of 14 non greased only 7 bend When? to the wet but on Sep 16 the proportion is better 17 out of 23 non greased being bent to the wet (I suppose their controls are all the radicles which were protruding independently of dates.

Sep 5. 8.27 am Caustic'd a 4th root just peeping through the netting, after 13 ½ hrs it had grown well & had not gone to wet, nor was it bent to wet properly at after 25 hrs, but it was growing out horizontally, that is it had a tendency to go uphill to the wet—
