Dec 1 Phaseolus— big jar
Slicing
14 beans pinned to cork (illegible) (illegible) of the big jar with wooden cover
From 1 to 8 inclusive the tips dipped in water
—"— 9 to 14 —"— the tips remained in air
On study chimney piece covered with brown paper caps
Slicing done between 11 & 11.30 am with razor Temp abou 66°
Examined at 9 pm. ie 10° 15'
All 8 in the water bend away from the cut except No 2 & this is not bent at all: & this one was noted in the morning as having had an extra big slice taken off.'
Of the air ones 3 are bent away from cuts, 3 not bent at all
They were examined without looking at the cuts & then comparing with the notes made in the morning as to the position of the cuts.
Dec 2. 10. 36 am —ie 23°
Two roots. 4 & 5 which were noted Dec 1 as slightly curved. now are bent close up to bean so that whole root looks strt, & the direction they point in is towards cut side & they make 60° below horizon.
[sketch]
Two Three others 3 6 & 7 retain their original directions away from cuts; one Two are is curved so that their tips makes 20° below horizon; the other is so, [sketch] nearly horizontal with a geotropic curve at tip — The third is
[sketch]
One, Nro 8, is curved makes 20° with horizon, the direction omitted on Dec 2 but it was so markedly curved on Dec 1 that I feel sure no change took place. Dec 2.

Phaseolus — big jar
Dec 2. 10. 36 am
The ones in the air have still only 3 clearly bent, & & these have retained their direction of Dec 1 except 14 one which is altered & points in no particular direction.
One had which was not curved on Dec 1 has a slight & doubtful curve away from cut.

Dec 3 Phaseolus — slicing
Dec. 3d Jar B
very long thin radicles
Sliced 5 beans at 9.20 am & put so that tips are in water Jar under paper cap on study chinmey piece
Examined at 6.45 pm 9° 35'
No effect in any except one which has curved from the cut.
Dec 4th 12. 17 pm (noon) ie 27°
The cuts were written down Dec 3 & the following table shows the amount of deviation of the roots from the proper position
Dec 3
Cuts are 645 pm Bend Dec 4 12. 17 pm
1 N O O
2 S O East; the root is nearly strt & makes 25° with Vert
3 E O E; this is direction of the root as a whole makes 40° with Vert; but has a faint curve to W
4 N O E root straight & makes angle 25 with vert
5 E W SE. root nearly straight & 30° with vertical: a slight westerly curve is seen in root

Phaseolus Dec 3 slicing
Jar C
5 beans sliced 9. 20 am, tips in water; covered with caps on study chimney piece
Cuts were as shown
9 20am 6 45pm Bends
1 W East (whole root) ie root nearly straight
2 N NE
3 E W only slight curve
4 W O
5 SE NW slight curve
Dec 4. 12. 17 noon
Cuts Bends
1 W W whole root straight & 60° with vertical
2 N E root nearly strt 25 with Vert: extreme tip curved (towards cut
3 E N 20° with vertical
4 W E 50° with vertical
5 SE ? 30° with vertical, the tip bends slightly away
