Germinated in saw-dust— Kept on Chimney Piece. Temp. about 78° during day.

(15°—16° C up-stairs)

& on Table dur from 5° P.m. square fixed to at 11° 30' a.m. square fixed carefully on summit.

(1). Big Pin Augt. 2d. 9°. a.m after 16° curled into almost complete Hoop ✔

(2) 9° a.m straight inclined to left & from S. put on sq. so as to increase this direction Aug 3d 7° 50' a.m — inclined from sqr. at angle 21° from vertical measured (or & this implies lies 69° below horizon )    ✔ 

(3) straight & vertical 9° a.m Aug 2d sq. fixed .(Aug 3d 7° 50' inclined from sqr but straight straight & vertical. no effect

Aug. Aug 3d 7° 50 has become (Aug 3d 4°. 40' summit decidedly inclined from sq. ✔

(7). 9° a.m fixed sqr — straight, but inclined from S & to left —(Aug 3d 8° a.m no effect slightly inclined from sq. 4° 40' plainly inclined from sqr, viz at angle of 23° measured ✔

Secondary Roots    jar B C. on sand-bath

Aug 3d. 8° 50' a.m sqr fixed on 13 secondary roots— all straight, some vertically down, most inclined— (The weight of sqr. on the inclined radicle wd pull them more vertically down.) (5°. P.m no effect on any of the Secondary Radicles.)

Aug 4 8° a.m, no clear effect, doubtful in 2 or 3 cases but I examined several of the rootlets & there tips were so thin & pointed they had become coated all round with shell-lac.
