1878 Maize Radicles with sand- paper & shel lac.
(31) ؟ June 25th 8° 20' a.m. large square bit of card — 5° 30' P.m. curved at right angles from card —(26' 8° a.m. do.) rectangle in 24° ✔
(32) 25th 5° 30' P.m fixed bit of card. (26th 8° a.m curved slightly from card.) |
(33) 25' 8° 20' elongated bit of card— 5° 30' somewhat curved from card (but I see many radicles grown very irregularly) 26th 8° a.m. considerably curved from card ✔
(34) 25 5° 30' fixed bit of card — (root sometime extending horizontally in straight line from seed.) 26th 8° a.m. has now obeyed geotropism & is very slightly bent laterally from card |
(35) Ap 24th 5° Pm. fixed bit— (25' 8° 20' curved to card straight) 5°. 30' P.m generally quite straight)— 26th 8° a.m quite straight O

26th 8° a.m. now makes a complete loop, for card brushed off in this action.

Summary 8 cases— in only 1 is the radicles not at all affected.

Radicles of Maize. Seeds germinated on wet sand & were then pinned to cork lid with sqr of sand-paper affixed to them at 8° a.m on June 28th 1878. No memorandum was made at time of shape of radicle; but I never affixed square except to ones approximately straight. —The following sketches

& note were made on 29th. at 8° a.m. ie after 24°. The sole doubt is whether the radicles naturally grow contorted. If they do not do so. There can be no doubt that the contact has greatly affected them.
