Roots on surface of Water

May 24 / 78

Beans had germinated in wet sand

Fixed a cork so as to slide up & down a retort stand & fixed the beans on horizontal pins stuck in parallel to the plane of the cotyledons. Fixed them so that under surface of root touched the water the plane of cotyledons being parallel to the surface of the water. The tip of the root was are so rather variably situated as regards the surface— when the root was quite straight [sketch] the point of root stuck up was clear of the surface. I think this was the case with all nearly all.

AM

9.20 4 beans whose roots were all about 10 mm long put in cellar in water 12°C the air being 13°C. Vessel covered with box which allowed air to come in below

9.55 4 beans (of about similar root length) were fixed in same way in water at 22°C & Box put put in a large tin box fairly dark which allowed air to pass through; Box put over a night light— These were temperatures of air which was same as water very nearly

Roots on surface

The hot air ones were examined at 5pm at and 2 roots had clearly bent down, & 2 showed a tendency

4.45 pm the air in cellar is 12C°, only one root slightly bent down.

11.pm all hot ones clearly bent down

no change in cold ones

May 25th (morning) – The cold ones show convexity above that is are beginning to grow clearly down.

May 26th

Fixed 4 roots whose lengths are mm 20 20 29 44 in the cellar at 9.35 am

6.30 pm temp 12.5C all gone down into water
