May 27th 8°. 50. Radicles long of Beans extended Horizontally. 2 with cards sand-paper & shell-lac on one side 3 with do beneath to see if will turn up opposed to geotropism. Whether card or geotropism acts energetically carries the day

4°. 50' (10) Obliquely lateral card— no geotropism, possibly trace of laterl deflection (28th, 8. 15 distinctly geotropic & bent from card)— after 24°

(12) card on lower side a mere trace of geotropism —(28th 8° 15' am slight geotropism) aft 24°

(13) point card on lower side very long root point geotropic slightly (28th 8° 15 a.m after 24°, hardly any geotropism. but root extremely long & has ceased to grow

(14) hardy any effect, card obliquely lateral roots very old (28. 8° 15 very slight geotropism., no no lateral effect roots very long & old.) & has not grown) [sketch]

(17) Card on lower side point slightly geotropic (28th 8° 15. bent at right angles downwards; this youngest radicle of lot

9°. 15' 3 radicles bent down vertically by wool tied to pin so as to make end of radicle perpendicular downwards with sand-paper & shell-lac laterally. Thread tied so near base as not to affect irritable part.—

5° P.m tip of one slightly bent from card, the other 2 not affected one has become oblique by elasticity—

28th 8° a.m. not one of the 3. affected.) ⨀

Radicles of Beans— suspended to lid of vessel with water.—

May 27th 10° 45' a.m.

3 Radicles painted longitudinally on one side with thick lamp-black & olive oil.— some long & some moderate radicles— When radicles slightly curved oil painted so as to make straight & to curve on opposite side.

1 radicle with only terminal 8—9 m.m thus painted.

3 Radicles painted same manner with thick precipitated chalk & olive oil

27th 4°. 45' no effect on any

Repainted 28' 8° 15'  on 2 successive days   30' a.m.

(B) Black 28th 8° 15 no effect— 29th 8° a.m no effect no

Panted with oil

☞ (as oil stops growth shows that shell-lac. did not injure tips of roots)

D Black 28' 8° 15. bent from (??) black (29th 8° a. bent clearly to black)

ie unpainted side grew quickest

G. (Black) 28' 8° 15 no effect (29th 8° a. bent very slight to  i.e.   black  unpainted side grew quickest

5/7 acted

H ( White) 28' 8° 15 no effect (29' 8° no effect do.) no

I. (white) 28' 8. 15 bent to white (29th 8° bent to white) ie unpainted side grew quicks

(L) white 28. 8. 15 a bent to white   (29th 8' clearly bent to white i.e. unpainted side grew quickst

(M.) Black 28' 8° 15 bent to black(?) (29th 8° Clearly bent upper side from black

(Now 29th 8° now placed roots in water & Kept in Study in dark)

(When it is said bent to Black or white, it shows that the unpainted side has grown quicker.)

May 29th 1878    Bean Radicles

10° 55' square of sand-paper & shell-lac to 6 beans with young radicles extended horizontally, paper fixed to under side, & rather obliquely to 2 of them, to see if Geotropism will conquer & make roots quite perpendicular downwards.

stet→ All the square have been put by mistake favouring geotropism. !!!!

(10) 4o 40' straight— card on lower side— Radicle Beans placed Horizontally.

30th 8° of course all pointing down perpendicularly Keep to see if they will bend beyond perpendicular, as card left attached—

(30th 4. 45 It is remarkable that none of them are pointing away from card— it certainly seems as if grew accustomed to stimulus of card.) (31st 4° 30' P.m 2 of the radicles have tips very slightly deflected from the card & from the perpendicular as if card had acted a little.—

Mem. Cielski burning with Heated platinum N. silver

29th 11°. 15' rubbed tip of radicle laterally or on back of 6 radicles. with stick of Nitrate of Silver— in several (30' 8°. a.m In some cases the Blackening had extended all round, in 2 cases no more flexure from blackened side than other side, but in 3 case seemed decided flexure from blackened side put in Water.

31' 11° a.m. Four are now quite hooked turning from bn blackened side— 2. equally blackened all round 1 straight & 1 curved— The 7th & last rather more curved to blackened side a doubtful case —

Evidence sufficient
