Vicia faba. germinated in Bran— slightly injured (N.B firewood sawdust killed— (make note) black (over) slime exuded— Bran smelt acid.—
Dec. 20th. 1878 8º 50' 3 with cards & shell lac. to last & 10 round circumference with as nearly as I cd effect same amt of shell-lac as aid for affixing cards, effected by putting smearing card & pressing apex of radicle with it & seeing that trace left on.— (Dec. 21' 10º. F. sliced 4 radicles sliced on Horse-chesnut.)
Vicia faba. Dec. 21 10º 30' sqr with shell lac. on 2 crooked radicle, but tips perpendicularly down & shell-lac alone on 5 radicles perpendicularly ↓ down— Study Table 54º— on Chimney Piece 57º
(This little oval dab of dried shell-lac. was 1.01 m.m in length & 0.63 in breadth, probably. smallest object which has acted)
(1) card 22d 8º 40' no action
do (2) card
do (3) (Everything else in this paper a failure)
do (4)
for I dare not trust shell-lac as cards have not acted.
(5)→ 4º 30' P.m bent at right angles— a small bead of shell-lac on. (ie in 6º) 22d 8º 40' now nearly straight
22 (6) d 8º 40' no action
— 8º 40' no action (7) } I cannot understand why none have acted— Is it the very cold night— or germinated in Peat.?

Dec. 22d 1878. 9º. a.m.
Beans— a little shell-lac put on square & as if card was to be affixed,, then tip of radicle touched with card; but very difficult to put on about same quantity— if tip scraped then more is left & a little bead formed.
(1) card & gum-water 24th 8º 10 card & gum —(25th 4º 30 deflected) 26th 8º a.m decidedly though very slightly deflected
(2) do 26th 8º no effect from minute bead of shell-lac
(3) card & shell-lac. 24' 8º 10 card & gum (25th 2 4º 30' card dropped off
(4). do Card do 26th 8º a.m can see no shell-lac no effect do 25th 8º am card dropped off quite straight
(5) do card. do 26 8º a.m shell-lac— little bead, no effect do do do do
(6) shell-lac. by self 24th 8º 10 card & gum (26th 8º a.m very slightly not deflected.
24' 8º 10' card (7) do & gum— 25th 4º 30' deflected. 26th 8º a.m certainly yet slightly deflected
26 (8) do the 8º a.m I can see no shell-lac.— anyhow quite straight
24 (9) do the 8º 10' card & gum (—25th 8º card affixed 4º 30' card slipped, quite straight
(10) do 25' 8º am card fixed
(11) do 25' 8º a.. card
(12) do 25' 8º a.m. card. } 26th 8º 30' no effect or very slight
(13) do— decayed
26 (14) do the 8º a.m no effect from shell-lac, or perhaps a trace of curvature.
(15) do 26' 8º am shell-lac disappeared
1/7 slightly affc
(The whole case very perplexing)
Dec. 23d 8º a.m. no effect on any of the 13, I believe Bean all too dry— they look dry— now put them with tips in water —(24th now grown well— 8º 10' put on card & gum, as above & shell lac on same side on the 13 others, of which some crooked, but tips of none bent —4º. 50' no action Temp of water 64º— (Dec. 25th 8º a.m. no clear effect; they had been kept, as well as those on Back on table all night & temp. certainly low, perhaps too low.— Several had been germinated in sawdust, & this though not fir-wood, had injured those long kept in it.

Beans with squares
Decr 25'
square fixed at 8º 40' a.m— 2 affixed with gum, rest with shell-lac.
(1) Bean of previous year with god radicle — gum-water— Old Bean germinated in damp Peat 4º 30' little deflected (26th 8º deflection very doubtful
(2) do old Bean — but shell-lac. (26th 8º I think. has been deflected)
(3) old Bean., shell-lac (26th 8º certainly a little deflected)
(4) new Bean,. germinated in water— gum-water— 26th 8º perhaps a trace of deflection
(5) new bean, germ in water affixed shell-lac— 4º 30' I think little deflected— 26th card dropped off
(6) new Bean shell-lac — 26th 8º card dropped, but I think has acted a little
(7) new Bean shell-lac (26th 8º deflection if any coincide with Sachs
(8) new bean shell-lac. 4º 30' I think little deflected 26' 8º no effect
3 or 4 / 8 very slightly deflected
on the 2 papers together 6/18 affected, but only slightly & slowly.
