(A
Radicles of Bean with very small square about 1/20' of inch of stiff sand-paper almost like card & very thin paper almost like linen attached with shell-lac to opposite sides. (Cause of action must be slight resistance to growth for cannot be weight, & with still gum-water resistance very slight, & therefore I tried these experiments., to show sensitivity to difference.
Differential. 3 others
(62) Ap. 23d 8° a.m fixed bits of to straight radicle only just out of bean. 4° 30' P.m (i.e. 8 1/2 hour) decidedly turned from card 25th. 8° a.m. do, but only slightly. Used
(63) Ap. 23' 8°. a.m young radicle 4° 30' not turned from card & bit was had been parallel to longer axis of radicle, removed & refixed it. 24th 8° 15 bent from card, 4°. 30' straight 25th 8° a.m., curved in line of Sachs curvature— Doubtful case ✔
(64) card, fixed on 23d on morning of 24th.— at 4° 30' & 25' 8° a.m, tip bent upwards & not directly from thicker card, for the 2 met on under side & the bending was upwards from plane of junction (Used) ✔ [sketch] [sketch]
(65) Ap. 23'. 8° a.m young straight radicle 4° 30' not bent: 24th 8° a.m a little bent from card 4° 30' moderately bent from card. 25th 8° a.m. decidedly bent laterally from card.
(66) Ap 22d 8° a.m. 4° 40' just perceptibly bent from card: 23d 8° am. slightly but certainly curved from card 24 & 25' 25' 8° a.m. very decidedly bent from card
(67) Ap 22d 8° a.m. 4° 40' conspicuously bent from car thick card : 23d. 7° 45' am., very strongly curved curved from perpendicular about 45°.— 25' 8° a.m. do
(68) Ap. 23d. 8. a.m. fixed cards : 4° 30' not bent: 24' 8° am decidedly & considerably bent 25' 8° a.m greatly bent from thicker paper

Thicker & thinner paper fixed to tips of Radicles
Beans
(69) Ap. 23d 8° a.m young radicle. 4° 30' not bent— 24th straight or not bent 24th 8° a.m. do. radicle point straight in line of gravity. The 2 cards or papers met at bottom thus & [sketch] on removing them, I fond that the thinner paper had far more shell lac forming quite a thick layer or cap.
(70) Ap 23d 8° am, very young radicle hardly out of bean, 4° 30' not, bent. 24th 8° a.m. 4° 30' slightly bent 25' 8° a.m moderately but decidedly bent from thicker card & from line of gravity
(Used)
(Nine specimens in these 2 pages.— thus doubtful case because card so fixed as to coincide with Sachs curvature .2d case where roots curved from line of junction of 2 cards & not more from thicker than thinner— 3d case no curvature for the thin paper was greatly thickened by shell lac.—)
(slip of paper pasted on:)
Differential action of Card & Paper.
(36)(37)(48) Ap 14' 8° 15' bits of stiff sand-paper & thin paper on opposite sides for differential action.
(48) Ap 14. 4° 30' P.m no effect.. 31— Ap 15th 8° 35 no effect
(36) — 4° 30 thin paper most effect (15'. 8° 40' very slightly curved from thick card) 16th 8° a.m. do) (17th do)
(37) — no effect (.15th. 8° 40' Curved from thicker card) 16th 8'. a.m. very decidedly bent from thicker card
— (17th. 8° am very considerably curved from thick card.)
