Bits of Sand Paper on Faba
Jun 10 9.30 am to 9.45 am
Shellacced with a good lot of shellac bits of sand paper which measured about 1.2 x 1.5 mm with the longer axis horizontal and (rough side surface inwards), so that the edge of the paper nearest the tip of the root is the edge at the dot at a measured distance from tip— Put in damp air in warm dark cupboard

Faba "cards" Damp air— Fixed with less shellac than before
15 Beans varying from 18 to 46 mm in length had cards sand paper stuck on at 3 & 4 mm from tip. After 12 1/2 11 hrs only one (No 3) showed any distinct effect, & was so:— [sketch], two others No 6 & 2 very slight bend towards no 3, 6, 2
When examined about 22 1/2 25 hrs from the beginning; No 2 had a sharp bend away; 3 had straightened: 5 slight bend away towards: 6 slight bend away: (all these have grown well) Nr 7, 8, 9 11, 12 had no bend & these had not grown properly. But 10 which has not bent grown well either has bent just at the card towards the card. 13 has a very slight bend towards & has grown well— Nrs 14 & 15 were not recorded unfortunately
Leaving out the 6 radicles that did not grow well, & nrs 14 & 15 as they were not recorded at the end—
There are only 7 roots & only one showed a distinct bend after 25 22 1/2 hrs. Or if one takes the first 12 1/2 hrs there are 9 roots. Of these 7 roots 6 had cards at 4 mm 1 got (No 13) which bent slightly had it at 3 mm
The one that bent (3), also 5 & 6 which showed faint bends towards & away, had card at 4 mm
No 10 which grew badly & yet bent towards card had it at 3 mm.
(Summary 15 radicles of which several did not grow well, after 11 hr 3/15 slightly bent to card: aft 22 1/2 hr 1/7 so bent; but 2 bent from card!! (over)
