April 9th. 1878— I described some time ago a pot with seedlings with some perfect leaves & with Cots as much raised as possible owing to included stem & now yet the Cots in this same pot are asleep— one seedling bore 6 true leaves— I had pinned open 1 Cot. & the difference between that & its fellow was conspicuous.—

April. 13th 1878 scratched both Cots for 1' (noon not cloudy day) with twigs— & cots of 2 seedling with single true leaf developed, & not a vestige of irritability.—
