July 2d 9° a.m. 1879. Picea pectinata— young trees in Pots. I Shoots pinched till indented at bases between thick zinc-wire [sketch] till somewhat flattened.
Pot I. finest Top-lateral shoot 16° below above Horizon unpinched — 2 others & leader pinched.
Sept 8th apparently not in least risen— leader Killed
Lower Branch— 2 oblique leaders pinched (& one pinched quite off) with a lower one, 41° below horizon, left unpinched. — 2 laterals almost Killed
