Stapelia sar sarpedon (Asclepiadeae (Decaisne))

Jun 23d. 1878. Seedlings sent from Kew. Cotyledons rudimentary, in size, but seem to protect plumule— the Hypocot breaks through ground bowed, with the 2 little cots closed. Hypocotyl much flattened in plane at right angles to plane00 of Cots; thickened considerably in upper part; so another case of correlation of rudimentary Cots & thickened Hypocotyl— as in Cacteæ.

Cots, not a quarter as broad as the thinner axis of Hypocotyl— In length measured internally from summit of point where plumule emerges .15 of inch & this includes the thickened projections from summit of Hypocotyl on each sides, forming the petioles of the Cotyledons. [sketch] ground
