Oct 18th 1879 8° a.m.— Beans— Radicles "Sachs' curvature "— radicles only when 1/10' of inch protruded — Beans germinated in peat fixed so that short radicles hang down vertically by eye. — over water in jar in dark on chimney piece Temp abt 70° F. — Being a rudimentary [function] agrees with variably aspect of presence & occasional absence.—

(1) 19' 4° 30' P.m quite straight (20th 8° a.m do) 4° 30' P.m. tip a little over Hilum

(2) 19. 4.30 some Sachs C. (20' 8° a.m. curvature strong— tip beyond pin-head 1/2 way to outer margin of Bean.) 4°. 30' P.m — tip beyond outer margin of Bean (21' 8° a.m bent horizontal Sacks

(3) 19' 4.30 quite straight tip over centre of Bean (20th 8° tip curved from Sachs) 4° 30 straight tip over nearly middle of Hilum.) (21 8° over Head of Pin)

(4) 19' 4. 30 straight (4° 30 tip 1/2 way between pin-Head & end of Hilum (21' over 8 a.m over Head of Pin)

(5) 19' 8° am some of Sachs (4° 30 P.m tip about over head of Pin) (20' 8° a.m. tip beyond outer margin of Bean.) 4° 30' as much beyond outer margin, as from pin-head to base of radicle

(6) 19' 4° 30' almost straight slightly inclined over bean (20' 8° tip over about 1/3 of Hilum) 4° 30 tip itself rather curved over 1/2 way between Pin Head & end of Hilum

(7) 19 4° 30 straight & short (20' 8° a.m straight) (4° 30 a little over Hilum) (21 8° a.m 1/2 way between Pin-Head & end of Hilum

(8) 19' 8° monstrous externally bent at rt. ∠s — 4. 30 Hooked up, opposed to gravity. (20th 8° a.m a rectangle. 23d thrown away

(Oct 25' 8 a.m. I can see no signs of reversal of Sachs' curvature— nor can Frank, so must give up this notion.)

(Oct 25' 8° a.m Cut off 2 more radicles to see if secondary will bend down filled up with water
