Dec 14th 1879 Phaseolus multiflorus. — Short Jar

9 beans pinned at 11° am. with radicles short & perpendicularly down— had germinated in different positions— fine black line drawn straight on hypocotyl from base of petiole.—

at 4° 30' P.m no 2. lines perhaps curved a trace no 8 curved in [illeg] to Sachs, perhaps due to radicles not having been placed geotropically.—

Dec 15' 8° a m no change

15' 4° 30' P.m (1) hypocotyl certainly slightly arched to beans, which stand on one end.

(2) like (1) I think trace of proper arch

(5) Beans transverse — trace of proper arch

Hypocotyl in seed coats is bent down on Cotyledons.

16th 8° a.m (1) Hyp. radius of 30 mm. to bean.

(2) little arched (4) trace of arch (5) radius of 20 m.m.

17' 9° a.m (1) Hyp. now become straight.

(1) radius 40 mm to bean.

4. 45' P.m. (2) radius 40 mm (3) radius of 60 mm (6) 40 mm

18th 10° 30' a m (1) no line now straight. (2) radius 30 mm.

4/9 arched

Dec 17 Eleven germinating seeds with radicles & hypocotyl measuring from base of petioles to apex from 1 to 2 inches in length (with one or 2 with one or 2 shorter) were placed in permanganate of potash & this coloured brown radicles & secondary radicles, but left a tolerably defined space on an average of the 11 of barely .3 of inch in length measured from base of petioles uncoloured or white. The separation between radicle & hypocotyl thus tested was often streaked, & sometimes the brown colour run up on one side to base of petioles; but the distinction of the parts generally fairly well defined. — My black lines were on average of same length of .3 of inch.—

(18th Where the reverse bending of radicles is due not to reverse curvature of Hypocotyl, but to growth & action of epicotyls, which pushes radicles from the bean, bases of petioles serving as hinge— deceived me us grossly at first

Dec 15' 8°. 30' a.m. Tall Jar —10 Beans as on last page with straight lines, 4°. 45' lines all straight.—

16th 8° a.m. (1) perhaps a trace of arch— (5) bent, but abruptly & a little below hypocotyl (9) arched radius 40 mm.

17th 9° am (1) radius 70 mm to bean (2) like (1) (5) radius 20 mm (6) radius 15 mm (7) radius of 70 mm (8) 70 mm (9) 30 mm (10) 80 mm.

18' 10° 30' a.m no. 10 60 mm.
