Klinostat Sachs Curvature

Phaseolus. pinned in damp air, (damp cover to cork & bell glass lined with wet blotting paper): the beans were soaked a on the klinostat & the machine has kept going all the time except for half a night after they grown well & when it did not effect the curve of the hypocotyl— The roots were wetted every morning

The bell glass in which they grew was covered with black paper externally; and klinostat stood in the dining room.

On Mar 25, 4 out of 7 had roots varying from 1 to 11 mm in length; 2 (Nrs 1 & 7) were crooked & irregular

Mar 26 The angle which the hypocotyl makes with with the horizon when the bean is looked at so was measured [sketch] ß, it may be called the angle which the root makes with the bean— since the edge of the bean was placed horizontal

[table not transcribed]

The side of the bean with the hilum was pl extended horizontally, in which position, the radicle with the short undeveloped hypocoty wd naturally grow perpendicularly downward, but they (over)

formed with the lower surface of the bean, angles varying between 6° & 55° & on average of 7 cases an angle of 27°; so that they were deflected by Sachs curvature 1° from the perpendicular downward course, which they wd naturally follow through [illeg] to the action of Geotropism
