1878. Lychnis githago. — Seedlings Heliotropism

[Pasitium]

Sept 14th at 11º 22' put behind book-screen— cotyledons only a little opened at 2º almost shut— I forgot to look earlier. Then placed in study window, & opened a little — at 5º P.m all the Cots. closed & asleep.

Sept 15' in Hothouse rubbed with needle for 45" the thickened base of midrib, but after 16' no signs of closing — At 11º 55' put behind book-screen after having been exposed to some gleam of sun-shine during rather cloudy day — not until 3º P.m any signs of closing & quite doubtful: at 4º moderately closed, but this may have been incipient sleep.— (Perhaps Cots too old)

[in margin:] Partly used

Sept 16th morning cloudy with gleams of sun shone in Hothouse, pot put in quite dark cup-board at 11º 20' a.m. at 3º 7' P.m. possibly a little closed: at 4º 5' the one of which I had measured angles, just perceptibly closed: then put in study window; at 5º 5' & 6º not asleep; but at 8º. 25' & 10º P.m. cotyledons well shut except their tips.—

Kept in dark, yet at 8º a.m on 17th Cotyledons well open.— though exposed to no light, behind bron paper, behind Book-screen.
