April 14th 1880

Ipomœa leptophylla. — first plant which was raised, & petioles now 2.65 inch in length above ground & rather more more than .4 beneath ground. The root perhaps a little enlarged.—

One of the plants in Peat. the seed of which had been buried at a marked depth had had petioles .6 inch in length beneath surface & .15 1.5 inch above surface not healthy or growing well. The second plant with petioles buried to about same depth— We may say about 1/2 inch buried safely — Is this enough to account for burying of tuber?

themselves; & this has been called nutation. The stems of climbing plants bend successively to all points of the compass, so that the apex appears to revolves, & this movement has been called by Sachs Revolving Nutation. (As we shall have to say much on this subject, we shall find we have found the terms circumnutation & circumnutate will be found much more convenient than that of revolving nutation.) It may be useful here briefly to describe the nature of this movement, as conspicuously displayed in climbing plants for one of essentially of the same nature kind found most extensively, for it is essentially the same in all cases. We may suppose that take a circumnutating stem is which happen to be bent towards the north; it then gradually bends a little
