March 23
Frank tells me that flower-stalk of Lathræa squamaria comes up doubled & that soil wet all round; glands described by Cohn.
I have just looked at one — it comes up with distal part of flower stem parallel to base
[sketch]
N. B The double arching of Hypocotyl &c plays same part, as the leaves whorls of pointed leaves of tulips, squills & Lilies, Arum &c which surround flower in buds & breaks through the ground.
Bracken Plume does it not rachis rise bowed??

April 7th I have examined some young flower-stems still much arched, yet a little open & I can see no meaning in Vauchers statement about arrangement of flowers—
If there is any difference they are apart on the under side of arch, so as to allow 2 legs to go closer together.
Ap. 14th I have looked at thoroughly well arched flower stems, with crown on level with ground, & it is all rubbish about flowers pointing to one side.
