Lathræa squamaria

Ap. 16. Plant large which had been washed quite clean— well shaken & put to drain. During Then placed on glass-plate with Bell-glass & during night secreted an immense quantity of water. — Again Glass Plate wiped & by 3° (17th) had again secreted several little pools & again wiped Plate.

(18th 8° a.m little pool, so that 4 or 5 large drops fell off glass when I turned it to one side— wiped it again: 2°. P.m. about 2 drops on glass.)

17th Washed another spec. allowed it to drain for 1 1/2 hrs & then put all the pieces to stand for 1/4 on Blotting paper & then put in jar with glass cover at 4° 45' P.m. I marked with black dots 5 scales & pushed blotting Paper in holes at back so that they were not then secreting.— (18th 8° am only a few drops at bottom.) 18th 4° 45' P.m has secreted only 25 measured minims.— (19th 4° 45' 8 minims)

Ap. 18th put some more plants in jar, allowing the jar upside down to drain for 1 hour. (6° P.m.) so that no more water wd run off.— 19' 5°' P.m 2 drachms —

(20th. 6° P.m. 21 minims— Scales so wet I cannot doubt water secreted by stem. —)

Weight of Plants, with flower-stem cut off 1611 gr

Weight of water secreted in 48° 183 grain (see Franks mem.)

Scale-like leaves subterranean folded back with longitudinal passages lined with small glands.

Lathroea weighed 106.8 gramms = 1,611 grains

Water 11.9 gramms = 183 grains
