Anoda Wrightii (Malvaceæ)
April 6th 1879 (1st Chapter)
3 Seedlings with fairly sized cots. horizontal by day — at 10° P.m, each Cot was 34° beneath horizon, so plainly declined down, but not enough to be called asleep.
Plant had been kept all day in Hot-House.—
The hypocotyl is highly heliotropic
[in margin:] After Gossypium
7th 8° 30' secured Hypocotyls to pins & placed the 3 before S.W. window in blackened box — day cloudy.—
(A good deal of sunshine as day went on. & the evening bright sunshine)
4° 50' — I do not know what to conclude — one seedling with cots not with least effect— a second with hypocotyl much bowed & this had bowed both cots. (Each being at right angle to Hypocotyl) to light.—
The 3d seedling, had hypocotyl also bowed, but 1 cot, was bent down to face light much more than other, & this looks as if cots. were heliotropic.—
[page] [1v]
Tension of cells previous to growth which is resisted in order to keep cots. horizontal during mid-day.—
