I must say at beginning of Chapt— This & Ramey only 2 cases known to me

I must allude in Summary Chapter to Hofmeister — Put Back this slip

Sleep is probably quite a general phenomenon, but does not prominently appear in the vast number of cases, because of the smallness of the movement. The cotyledons of all the observed seedlings of the Alsineæ & Sileneæ bent up at night (in Stellaria media so that they touch each other)

The leaves of "Kopfkohlpflanzen" & Pistia Stratiotes are more inclined at might than by day—

[Movement in plants, p. 255: "(32.) Pistia stratiotes (Aroideae, Fam. 30).—Hofmeister remarks that the leaves of this floating water-plant are more highly inclined at night than by day.*
