Jan 21. 10° P.m 1880.— Naples Cotton.—
Pot with 3 seedlings. — Cotyledons. Horizontal 2 seedlings with Largest Cots. 1.25 inch in breadth; ie at right angles to mid-rib.—
Feb 1. 10° 10' P.m. Naples Cotton
Cots of 2 seedlings now 1.9 in breath & very nearly, vertical
1 young leave 1/4 inch in length found
The seedlings with biggest Cots. (viz 2 inches in breadth, about 40° beneath Horizon. Feb 2d. 6 50' a.m they were almost horizontal before it was light— therefore not directly due to light
(Feb. 2d 10° 10' P.m.— (at noon pot with 3 biggest seedlings (Bright day) a little arched but only a trifle beneath horizon). In none of 3 pots Cots: much depressed! what can meaning be, were they flaccid yesterday? The seedling with big pin most depressed & Cots only 25° beneath Horizon.)
(Feb. 3d 10° 15' P.m. In none of 3 pots Cots depressed— I think depression may have been caused by flagging from want of water— day moderately bright.)
Feb 4th. not watered this day or yesterday. 10. 25' P.m— in 2 larger pots cots, somewhat fallen, & yet not nearly enough to be called sleep)
(Feb 5th 10 10' P.m. not watered— all day, & not asleep— The plant single in pot rather withered & drooping & thrown away)
(Feby. 6th. 10° 20' P.m— not watered, not in least asleep.)
(Feb. 17th 7° a.m. The Bell glass was left off last night in study & now Cots flaccid & hanging vertically down: watered plants & put on Bell- Glass & sent them to Hot House)
[illeg] In afternoon Cots rose to horizontal position— At 10°. Pm. a little flabby so that some a little depressed, but on turning pot upside down, they again became immediately Horizontal.—
