Ap. 28th 1880 Ipomœa bona nox.—

Late Last night cotyledons highly inclined. — This evening pot laid horizontally, at 5° 30' P.m, when Cots were still horizontal & petioles almost straight — now at 10° 15' P.m the Cots have steered partly rounding by apogeotropism & which makes it difficult to measure their declination, but are inclined beneath horizon, 46° & 43°.

Seedlings only few days old after full expansion of Cots. Tallest Hypo 1.8 inch high— with minute plumules developed

Petioles long .72 inch long

Cot. blade largest in breadth 3 1/4 inch!!

----- in length in middle notched part along midrib 1.3 inch

Blade of Cot thin & not very heavy— Petioles now arched downwards; & it is this arching which causes the depression of blades, & which could not possibly here have been caused by weight.)

(29th 10° 10' P.m Pot turned upside down at 5° 45' P.m & now Cots not asleep, weight too great to lift, though probably aided by apogeotropism: after standing upright for about 1/4 of Hour, the cots. become somewhat declined beneath Horizon.

[32v]

Ap. 30° 10° 15' P.m. Pot kept upright in dark day has been moderately bright— both cots of both seedlings stood at a mean angle of 63° beneath horizon, but on both plant the one Cots which had faced light was perpendicularly down & the other 36° beneath horizon— they had been horizontal during day. Plumule now. 44 inch tall, but very thin.—

(After a few more days [2 words illeg] breadth heads increased to… & now they stood at night, at.. beneath the horizon.

May 5th— Cot. — tip 4 1/2 inches in breadth—

10. 20' P.m

42° 31° from perpendicular = 90 [-] 42 [=] 48° beneath H.

26°. do 90 [-] 26 [=] 64° do

[33]

Ap. 30 1880 Ipomœa coccinea.

10° 10' P.m.

2 seedlings, one rather younger with cots. almost horizontal, the other 2 day or 3 days older, but still young with cots 55° beneath horizon. Cots. thin & not heavy; length to bottom of notch. 4 inch— breadth in broadest part. 82 inch. Blade thin Petioles short. 2 inch— Curved down at night— were quite horizontal down at noon. It is here out of question that weight of Cot causes depression— Petioles highly elastic, yet we see that the younger cots. were hardly at all depressed at night—

May 4th 10° P.m. to night the 2 Cots stand one 64° & the other 48° beneath horizon.— Plumules a fine filament. —
