Smithia sensitiva (Used)

Ap. 9— Cots. with no bloom— are sensitive to being slightly rubbed with the pointed stick

Both Cots were rubbed alternately on upper & lower surface for only 1'.

Before hand they formed angle together of 136°; after 10' from commencement of rubbing formed angle of only 83° = 26°; after 32' from do angle of 75°; so each cot had rose 30' 30".

After 1° 35'. (ie at 1° 45' P.m) the cots had opened again & now formed angles of 120° together. At 4° 10 5" P.m had risen again & begun to go to sleep for now formed angle of only 63°. Like those of Cassia certainly sensitive to touch.

Shut at night, so sleep excellently & does not wake early in morning

Used

April 13' noon. a small partially unfolded true leaf. Day cloudy & warm— Cots seem more sensitive than on former trial, though so much. They stood at of 136° together, & both were rubbed with twig for 1' & in 6' from commencement of rubbing they stood at of 72°, so each had risen 32°; they remained in same position for next 15', but when looked at again, after 18' additional minute (i.e. 40' after the commencement of rubbing) they formed together only an angle of 100°, so each had fallen 14°. —

The first young leaf seems very little sensitive Ap. 16th.

The Cots. are hardly or not at all sensitive to fine jet of water from ether spray. (Used)

[insertion:] To the worked in I think

First true leaf slightly sensitive — some bloom on it.

Smithia Pfundii the true leaves on plants 3-4 inches not in the least sensitive.
