(1) white thread cots open on Jan 6th Horizontal on 7th 10° P.m not in least closed— probably from not light enough & cold in study─ Kept all day in Study

Jan 8th horizontal at midday; at 10° P.m vertical, & even crossed as they did not stand exactly opposite so they had risen 90° [sketches]

Jan 9th noon open less than rectangle

(2) red worsted open Jan 7th. (1 cot imperfect).

10° P.m not in least closed Kept all day in Study

Jan 8th 10° P.m vertical with tips crossed as above in the morning they were horizontal

Jan 9th. noon open less than rectangle.

(3 & 4) thick white cotton — 9th noon open less than rectangle

work in Chapter I on seedlings & under sleep of Cotyledons.

1879 Beta vulgaris

Jan. 22d Kept all day in Hot-House

10° P.m.

White thread Purple thread} Cots I think somewhat more closed them in day}

Red wool Black wool} Cots considerably closed closed (This in 6 days only some)

1 thick white 1 string-cotton} nearly or quite as much open as they were at midday.

It seems that by having been kept hot all day they close more at night.

Jan 13' left all day before N.E. window in study.— At noon I observed petioles on base of cots, all open whereas they had been closed on previous night, & I measured angle of white thread: at 9°. 30 P.m, all in exactly the same state as at noon, day not so cold as previous days: but has coldness stopped growth & movement?—

(14' Kept all day in Hot House & previous previous night on chimney piece of Study— 9° 30' P.m, cannot be called asleep yet bases of cots. certainly in closer approximation than during day— tips of cots considerably deflected.—

(18th bases of Cots, not in the least closed, no sign of any true leaves as yet; Kept in Cool hot-House all time
